2026 ranking

The top VPNs this month, by the numbers.

These three rank above 60 other providers we tested in 2026. Independent no-logs audits on file. Kill-switch holds verified under forced reconnect. Modern protocol support — WireGuard, Lightway, NordLynx — with same-continent speeds above 400 Mbps. Each carries a real money-back window, so you can verify the score yourself before committing to a year.

What to look for in 2026

Five things that actually separate a good VPN from a slow, leaky one.

  • An audited no-logs policy. A claim without an audit is just marketing. Deloitte, KPMG, Cure53, and Securitum are the auditors whose reports actually mean something.
  • A kill switch that holds under reconnect. Most VPNs ship one. Most fail when the tunnel drops mid-session. Test yours.
  • Jurisdiction outside Five and Fourteen Eyes. Panama, Switzerland, the British Virgin Islands, and Iceland are privacy-friendly. US, UK, Australia, and Canada are not.
  • Modern protocols only. WireGuard, Lightway, NordLynx. If a provider still defaults to PPTP or L2TP in 2026, walk away.
  • A verifiable money-back window. 30 days is the floor. Test the speed and the streaming unblock rate on your own connection before the refund window closes.
By use case

The best VPN for what you actually do.

The fastest VPN for streaming Netflix isn’t the same as the most private VPN for torrenting on a busy seedbox, and neither is the right pick for low-latency competitive gaming. The rubric weighting changes by use case — streaming demands unblock rate and 4K throughput, privacy demands an audit history and friendly jurisdiction, gaming demands ping and jitter stability. Each ranking below uses the same lab but a different weighting, so the top pick is the one that actually wins your specific test, not the one with the biggest banner.

How we rank

A ranking is only as good as the method behind it.

Every VPN we list goes through the same battery of tests: speed across 5 cities, privacy audit-trail review, streaming unblock checks on the four biggest platforms, kill-switch verification, and a feature inventory against a published rubric. The full methodology — including raw data and weightings — is open.
