FAQ

Common questions.

Quick answers to the questions readers actually ask before picking a VPN for this use case.

Does a VPN make me anonymous online?

No. A VPN changes who can see your traffic — from your ISP to the VPN provider — but it doesn't anonymise you in any general sense. Anything you log into while connected is still identified by your account. Anything tracked by browser fingerprinting still tracks you. A VPN is one component of a privacy stack, not a substitute for one.

What's the difference between 'no logs' and 'audited no logs'?

A 'no logs' claim is a promise the provider makes in its marketing. An 'audited no logs' claim is one where an independent firm has reviewed the provider's server configuration, internal processes, and operational handling to verify the promise is reflected in practice. For privacy use specifically, the audit is what makes the claim worth anything.

Which jurisdictions are best for VPN providers?

Jurisdictions outside the Five Eyes and Fourteen Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangements have more legal headroom to resist disclosure orders. The canonical examples in 2026 are Panama, Switzerland, the British Virgin Islands, and Iceland. None of these are immune to legal process, but the legal process is more constrained than in the US, UK, or other Five Eyes nations.

How does a warrant canary actually work?

A warrant canary is a regularly-updated statement on a provider's site asserting that no secret warrants have been received. In jurisdictions where the provider would be legally barred from disclosing receipt of a warrant, the warrant canary works by omission — if the canary stops being updated on schedule, the inference is that something has changed. The signal is imperfect (the provider might simply forget to update) but it's the closest thing to a credible commitment available.

Should I use Tor instead of a VPN for privacy?

Tor and a VPN solve different problems and aren't substitutes for each other. Tor anonymises by routing traffic through multiple volunteer-operated relays, which provides stronger privacy at the cost of significantly slower speeds and incompatibility with most modern web apps. A VPN provides faster, more usable traffic protection at the cost of having to trust a single provider. For most readers, a VPN is the right tool; for genuine high-stakes privacy needs, Tor is the better answer.

Are open-source VPN clients meaningfully better?

For privacy use, yes. Open-source clients let independent researchers verify what the code does, which is the strongest available version of the no-logs commitment — you don't have to trust the provider, because you can verify the binary. Closed-source clients can still be trustworthy, but the trust depends entirely on the audit and the provider's reputation; with open-source, it depends on the code.
